Little Saints Preschool Program -Book List

The following books, which we carry, are some of the titles recommended in the Little Saints Catholic Preschool Program:

This program is a fun and complete preschool program with lessons in 40 different themes!!!  The read-aloud books listed here are a sample of those that the author recommends; in fact, she suggests taking your Little Saints text to the library to find most of the reading material!  The items on the list that follow are picture books from the themes: My Family, Pets and Pals, Religion, Colors, Feathered Friends and Little Christians, My Home and Neighborhood, St. Joseph's Day, Road and Rail, I Belong to God, It's About Time, and Shapes.

The books on the booklist from Little Saints to A Child's Garden of Verses are integral texts that can be used over and over again in the program.  The Mommy It's a Renoir! series is an excellent art appreciation series for all ages!  We recommend starting with the text to develop a preschool curriculum that will fit your family's needs and schedules.

Mommy, It's A Renoir! - How to Use Child-size Masterpieces

This is an excellent program with many applications!  The program's primary focus is to strengthen a child's ability to observe and appreciate beauty.  The program offers of a teacher's text, which describes how to use child-size reproductions of classical masterpieces in various ways.  The text covers all the steps in the program.  Each step increases in difficulty on numerous levels, including the child's ability to see similarities and differences of particular artists and schools of art, recognizing famous artists and famous paintings and working with specific subjects over a period of time.  The cards you choose to use depend upon the ages of your children and the number of children you with whom you will use this program.  We recommend you begin with the text and select one set of cards.  The first three steps (Steps 1,2,3) work in the same manner to identify similarities, differences and paintings by the same artist but differ in level of difficulty.  Step four focuses on identifying famous artists and their work (the artists chosen differ significantly in style to make this exercise very enjoyable and yet not a major challenge).  Step five helps the child identify famous works of art with their titles (and their artists)-this step works best if the child is able to read.  The Hudson River School of Art cards, the American Impressionist Art cards and Paintings of the American West work on recognizing various schools of art.  We recommend the following: Steps 1,2,3 Easy for preschool to kindergarten; Steps 1,2,3 Intermediate for first grade; Steps 1,2,3 Advanced for second grade; Steps 4 and 5 for third grade; and the Hudson River School of Art cards, the American Impressionist Art cards, Step 8 for fourth and fifth grades.  However, your older children will also enjoy working with this series as well so be sure to include them!

What sets this book apart from anything out there in the marklet is that it is designed to study entire pieces of classical music. "Appreciating classical music means developing your child's listening ability to hear that simple melody, its variations and the harmonies and countermelodies that accompany it and putting it into the context of the larger work"....  thus growing at a deeper level of appreciation and recognition of truth and beauty. By the time you are finished, you and your children will be able to identify all the most familiar musical themes--and you'll have discovered  many more, each of incomparable beauty!!!!

"It is is a very easy-to-use resource for parents whatever their own musical background!" -                                                                                                                -Cathy Duffy

"I like the book very much, because it makes the inclusion of beautiful pieces of music in the curriculum practical for the homeschooling family. It'll help all of us to move music appreciation, which is so important in the formation of the soul, from the 'back burner' to the front. The material in the text is easy to understand but very informative." ---Laura Berquist
